We hear so much about green tea, but what really are the green tea health benefits? Here I'll take a look at green tea for weight loss, nutrition, health and anti aging.
If you're looking to keep away from caffeine, then I'm afraid green tea is not for you. Green tea still has caffeine in it, albeit considerably less than a normal cup of tea or coffee.
Green tea has approximately 35 mg of caffeine in 6oz/180ml in it versus 100 mg in a 6oz/180ml cup or normal tea or coffee. So you can't class green tea as a 'herbal' tea because of the small amount of caffeine in it.
However, it does have some health benefits of which I have discussed below.
For health and glowing skin purposes, green tea does has some benefits. Green tea contains important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory chemicals. *What this means is that because of the high volume of antioxidants, especially catechin polyphenols, such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) drinking green tea will help fight and kill off free radical damage and can help prevent UV-induced skin cancer.
Research has also shown that this tea can also help protect you against other forms of cancer such as ovarian, colon, lung and gastric cancers. The polyphenols have also been suggested to help prevent rheumatoid arthritis.
In addition, studies have concluded that drinking green tea or taking a supplement for a minimum period of eight weeks has been shown to improve the elastic tissue in the dermal layer of skin (top layer). However please note that these studies were taken on healthy women with moderately aged skin.
If you've seen the adverts all over the Internet that drinking green tea gives you accelerated weight loss, then please don't take much notice of them. These ladies and men may have lost weight but it's certainly not down to just drinking green tea.
These people will be affiliated with a green tea merchant which means that if you buy their recommended 'expensive' green tea (or Oolong tea) package for weight loss, then they will make a percentage off your purchase. It's as simple as that. They are after your money!
From what I have read on green tea for weight loss is this. There's no documented scientific evidence to prove that green tea accelerates weight loss.
A Japanese study has provided evidence that drinking 5 cups of green tea a day only burns approximately 70 calories through thermogenesis (raising body heat which increases metabolism). Therefore this cannot be recommended as a weight loss product.
Furthermore, Ann Louise Gittleman* says this about drinking green tea for weight loss:
"Although green tea only contains a third of caffeine of a regular coffee, it is still caffeine." ...."Even this small amount can overload the liver and inhibit it's fat-burning duties."
She goes on to say "Black and green tea are naturally high in copper and excess copper can impair the conversion of the thyroid hormones. When this occurs, your energy production slows down, you feel tired and your weight can escalate."
Please note that Ann Louise Gittleman is talking in context about losing weight with her Fat Flush System which is based on the liver as the major fat burning organ.
I don't think that there's enough evidence that drinking green tea can be used as a weight loss remedy, however there are case studies to show that green tea for health benefits can be useful.
My personal opinion is that green tea has received far too much 'hype' recently and people are being drawn into the conclusion that it's a miracle drink for weight loss and health of which it is not.
Please note that drinking green tea for health, anti aging or weight loss must also be accompanied by exercise and a good healthy eating plan.
