Healthy Smoothies

Delicious healthy smoothies are a great way to eat your fruits to get health benefits from their vitamins, minerals and antioxidant properties.  If you need to lose a few pounds, then try weight loss smoothies to help you reach your goals.

Benefits of Smoothies

I'll start off with outlining the benefits of smoothies, but they must be healthy ones or else there wouldn't be many benefits apart from taste!

There are many types of smoothies you can buy ready-made in shops but be aware that many of them aren't necessarily healthy and can put weight on you.

Healthy smoothies normally consist of fruit or vegetables and we all know how important fruit and vegetables are in our daily diet right?

So what better way to eat raw food (uncooked fruit and vegetables) than having them in a delicious smoothie! By mixing them up with other ingredients makes it a whole lot easier and tastier, to eat.

  • You can easily incorporate a raw food;
  • Fruit & veg are full of vitamins and minerals;
  • Some fruit & vegetables contain antioxidants;
  • They are cheap and quick to make.

How To Make A Smoothie

You need to have a blender.  I know that that sounds a pretty obvious statement but some people do get confused between a blender and a juicer.  A juicer extracts the natural fibres in fruits whilst a blender blends them altogether which doesn't leave out any nutrients at all which is what you want.

The Base

You need a base for your smoothie.  You have a choice according to your own taste and preferences.  The base will make your smoothie thick and creamy which helps fill you up further.healthy smoothies

Bases for smoothies can consist of:

  • Whey powder;
  • Low fat yoghurt;
  • Bananas;
  • Pears.

Liquid

Next you will need some sort of liquid for your smoothie.  You have three choices here:

  • Coconut milk;
  • Water;
  • Fruit juice.

I personally just use water as it comes out of the tap and is free.  Be careful if you want to drink smoothies to shed a few pounds as fruit juices tend to be full of sugar and if you are blending fruits which also contain sugar then you will have a pretty high in sugar drink which isn't exactly healthy or slimming.

Tip: Put some ice cubes in your blender with the fruit which gives a very refreshing and chilled drink.  Alternatively you can use frozen berries, I personally keep tubs of frozen raspberries and blackberries in my freezer and put them straight into the blender.

Weight Loss Smoothies

Smoothies for losing weight are a great way to get your nutrients especially fibre.  Fibre fills you up and makes you fuller for longer so this makes smoothies a greaweight loss smoothiet contender when it comes to shedding pounds without feeling hungry.

Of course you'll have to use low-fat bases, for example you don't want to be using full-fat diary products such as yoghurt and milk or you won't be losing any weight using these.

Personally I like to use whey powder as it's good as a protein, it's convenient (you just put one or two scoops in) and it makes the drink very creamy and yummy. 

My favorite is raspberry smoothies made with whey powder and water and a cup full of frozen raspberries.  Raspberries are very low in fat and sugar and are classed as a superfood which is ideal if you're trying to lose weight.

Tip:  If you use ripe fruits you will naturally get a sweet sugary taste and you won't need to put any extra sugar or sugar substitute in your drink.

Of course you can use any fruit and vegetable combinations to suit your personal taste.
